PostSubject: Bike won't start...   August 16th 2009, 20:47

....after being run for 5-10 minutes, I'll shut it off, then try to start it again and it won't start. It will barely try to turn over. After a couple of embarassing minutes it will finally fire up. Does this sound like my battery is giving up the ghost?

That would be my first guess, take it to a battery place and have them test it first before you spend the money..

I've already called Kayla and she is sending me a check to get a new battery. Thanks Mike!

could be, first make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. check the charging system first. with the engine running you should have between 13.4-14.5 volts going to the battery. let the engine get good and hot, and recheck the charging system. voltage maybe lower but should be still in that range. as the wiring gets hot, it expands, and problems may not show up until then. if that's OK, charge the battery. most cycle shop can load test the battery for you, or after the battery is good and charged, leave it sit or 8-10 hrs. BEFORE trying to start the bike, check the standing voltage. you should have over 12 volts. if not battery is bad. if OK, hook it up to the bike and with a meter hooked up, crank the engine over, and watch the voltage. voltage should not go under 10.5 volts when cranking, if so, bad battery.
hope this helps.

There's only a handful of reasons a battery won't charge.

The state of the battery is one reason. If you've left it sitting for a long period enough to let the battery's plates sulfate so it will no longer accept a charge, or if the battery has been cared for if it's in the range of 5 years old.

A bad magneto/stator is another reason, but that's really rare unless the area has been struck as in an accident, or you've had those parts off and dropped them.

Finally, a bad rectifier/regulator...its job is to change the AC produced by the magneto assembly to DC current, and drop the voltage to an appropriate level for charging a 12v battery. The service manual will give specs on the amps/voltage that are supposed to be coming off the assembly directly, then after they pass through the rectifier. You can measure them with a multimeter to see if the bike is within spec. I know I worked on a few Hyosung bikes (GARBAGE) whose charging currents were insufficient right out of the factory, and they had no fix for the issue. Suzuki is a classier manufacturer though, so no worries there.

If everything is A-ok on those fronts, you may be getting a power draw from somewhere...which requires a different investigation altogether.

Thanks for the help!

They told me that they changed the rectifier/regulator but didnt work. The bike is brand new, not even 1000kms.I told them about the battery but they already put another battery and even this one still not receiving charge.According to them they now believe on a bad magneto/stator problem (as you just wrote).

This problem started few days after i purchased the bike.First time i just started the bike with no problems but after the ride i stoped for a while and when i jumped in to start the engine again it wont start.I could hear the engine trying to start but nothing.at that time i went to the dealer and they changed the battery with another bike (Bking)that was on the showroom. They told me that the reason could be the bike standing at the showroom for to long before i bought it.It was ok for a few days, until one day after stoping the engine i just want to start it again(not even 2 min after stoping) and guess what? it didnt start!

Well, i had to start it by having someone pushing the bike and after having the engine running the bike went crazy. The gauges started flashing and i went up driving without any indication and after that i had the FI light on and the engine stoped.Since that, the bike is sleeping with the dealer.

Sad

When I also had that problem it turned out to be 1 dead cell in battery.
New battery fixed it.

I have twice had issues with not starting. All the symtoms of a flat battrey but the first time one of the brushes in the starter motor was jammed in its holder (at 4500Kms). This time the bike has burnt the brushes out (8500Kms). Dealer has bike at the shop waiting for parts but has lent me a Busa to play with. Bike is only 6 Months old.

burnt brushes indicate a weak battery or maybe low voltage overheating the brushes. Do a cap check check on the battery or I would just replace.
