PostSubject: My kid dropped a socket down my exhaust...HELP!!!!   September 25th 2009, 21:10

As I was finishing up the installation of my new V-Stream, my 3 year old dropped a 10MM deep well socket down my exhaust (Yoshimura). I removed the exhaust mufflers and couldn't find it.......please help....will this mess up my bike if I can't get it out? My thinking is that it's down to the catalytic converter. Any ideas, tips and advice are appreciated.

If a socket can go somewhere, a magnetic retriever should be able to get to it - assuming you have one. Try a coat hanger wire with the end bent in a 90 degree but with a short enough 'L' that it can get through the socket too. Did you shake the cans too see if it didn't get stuck there before you go probing further into the cat? Good luck man - my kid once dumped a quart of motor oil into the gas tank of my snowmobile - and it wasn't premix..........

Lower a magnet tied to a string down the pipe, should get it.

You can retrieve it from the left side while on the side stand regardless of which vent he put it into. They both collect from a central chamber. Search the posts and see where an owner cut the top off of the cannister to show the exhaust routing, should be very helpful in showing you where the socket will go as you tilt her left and right.
